Bel Canto (literally "beautiful singing") refers both to an era and style
of vocal music composition typified by Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini. It
also refers to a "school" of vocal pedagogy (or technique), typified by
the teachings of Manuel Garcia (who was active during the Bel Canto era,
when Rossini, Donizetti, and Bellini were writing) and later Mathilde
Marchesi, who taught such luminaries of the late nineteenth and early 20th
century as Geraldine Farrar and Nellie Melba.
