I've found that the technique of memorizing "keywords" in order - as in the Amahl's mother's aria example - is absolutely critical in Sondheim songs. Sondheim is a master at writing lyrics where the verses resemble each other, but with slight variations - as in "Not a day goes by" or "The Miller's Son". The only way to keep from repeating a phrase instead of singing the correct variation is to memeorize the "keyword" in each verse that makes it different from the others.
