Subject:  Re: classical music

Hi Dean:
Here's how I've explained it to kids:
Any music written in the same manner
as that which was described in the dictionary
could be classical. After all, 20century composers
like John Cage fall into the "classical" category,
not "Pop" even though they all write in the 20C.
It's more a reference to style and who the potential
audience will be. Britney Spears wouldn't likely
perform at a symphony concert (unless maybe a
"pops" concert????LOL) and even if she did, she
would not sing Mozart (let's hope!!!).
If one was studying music history, the general eras were
Baroque/Classical/Romantic/Impressionistic/20century modern
and even they had sub-categories.
But in the general sense, all of the above music falls into that
category of "classical music" as opposed to Jazz/RockPop/Country/
etc.
Don't you love the minds of 10 year olds? Always challenging and
questioning and wanting to know more. I love that about kids!
