Dear List:
I recall reading in Jerome Hine's book (Great Singers on Great Singing or something like that) the chapter with Paul Plishka (bass), and Plishka said (somewhat contrary to the opinion of the previous post) that basses are paid for their *high* notes (along with the expectation of a certain kind of sound quality) - thus the idea that money notes are high ones for baritones and basses, not just for tenors.
