Dear All,

Whilst I agree for the most part about oratorio
convention, what if you're the sort of singer (like me
for instance) who the minute the score is in my hand,
I make mistakes!! I'm forever glancing at the wretched
thing and look at the wrong places!! So, I never use a
score when doing an oratorio.

As to hand/face gesture. You've got to do a little
something I think? I'm not saying waving the arms
around like a policeman on duty, but you are there to
interpret the music and my goodness, it would be dull
if you stood there like an automaton!! Personally, I
don't find gesture great in opera either. A nice
stillness can be much more profound and dignified.

As to oratorio being non self-serving but only to the
glory of God, I would also argue that God gave me my
wonderful gift and it should be used to it's maximum
for interpretation at all times.

Them's just my thoughts!!

Best wishes,

Ian Voice wrecker to the stars.
