John,

Speech Level Singing is a technique based on exercises which cause your vocal
cords adduct well and your larynx to stay relaxed at the middle of your neck,
which results in optimal breath support, tone, range, freedom, etc. We do this
by targeting the natural bridges (passaggi) in the voice which connect the
different voice registers. This technique is used by over 100 Grammy Award
Winners and 4 National Metropolitan Opera Audition Winners, amonst others.

So basically it's a form of Bel Canto applied to all styles of music.
