naomi,

oddly enough, i am a serious ham when it comes to telling jokes or
amusing stories and i don't seem to have much trouble remembering the obscene
versions of songs that i have or, someone else has come up with. so,
perhaps it is the more protected emotions that i feel more vunerable in
expressing.

you are correct in assuming i am comfortable making recordings. i seem
to be able to concentrate solely on what i am doing when making some kind of
recording. having the option to assess what i have done and 're-calibrate
my aim' for the next take, makes the process more like painting rather than
performing.

i think the fear of recording comes from several things; inexperience
with recording, a deadline, working with a large group where multiple takes
are impractical and being in a recording situation where expense is a major
consideration. there is not a whole lot one can do about any of these
except the first one. and i am astonished at how many singers do not tape
themselves on a regular basis.
