Dear Isabelle, Leslie, and Vocalistmates,
Inderal is the prototypic beta-blocker [generic name-propranolol]. It "sits" on and "blocks" stimulation of receptor sites for adrenaline-like compounds which are released in response to "fight or flight" type physiologic states. So, as was pointed out the pulse slows, palpitations diminish and one feels more calm. It is not a "nerve-calming" drug or antidepressant in any way and, along with other beta-blockers, is particularly useful in those people who are disturbed by a sense of the heart pounding when they are about to perform. Beta-blockers have other medical uses, too, such as in controlling blood pressure and arrhythmias, but that's another topic. It has no Valium-like activity whatsoever, and is non-addictive in a physiologic sense. But even so, some people hate to rely on ANYthing external to themselves to control nervous tension. As for me, I like the nervous "buzz" I get just before I am going to perform, and tend to worry when I'm not nervous. However, I suppose if I wanted to break from using Inderal to control stage fright, I'd look to either meditation or hypnotherapy.
