The subject line is my cute ;-) way of putting some perspective on the question of what singers should and should not do. Since the early days of the original Vocalist, I remember discussions on whether singers should do sit-ups, run, eat one thing or another (chocolate, etc.), drink various items (carbonated beverages, e.g.), meditate, do Pilates or some other body mechanics, take this or that medication (hormones, anti-inflamatories, etc.), see this or that practitioner and on and on.
IMHO, there is only one thing a singer should NEVER do: smoke.
Other than that, it is all a case by case determination. If you swim regularly and have no problems, do it. Drink carbonated beverages, milk and eat chocolate before a performance if it doesn't affect you. I can not think of anything health-wise that one can say is always true except that no one ever should smoke - period.
