heather,

a number of rock bands in the 70s, yes, asia, emerson, lake & palmer,
nice, frank zappa, king crimson, etc. made use of classical techniques as
well as actual pieces. rick wakeman, on yes' album 'fragile' did a keyboard
arrangment of the scherzo from brahms 4th symphony, keith emerson did a weird
rendition of the third movement from tchaikovsky's 6th symphony with nice and
later, with elp, did the hoedown from copland's 'rodeo', etc. many of them
either grew up with some classical training or sought after it as a source
for improvment.
