i whole-heartedly second your point. i would go on to paraphrase
richard miller in saying that developing agility is not only good for fast,
running note passages but, is also key to a good sostenuto. without the
freedom to sing fast scales, the freedom to sing sostenuto is not there
either. lastly, i think it is much easier to hit high notes your afraid of
and run away before they hit back.
