I forgot to add, "without producing a breathy soft whooshy babyish tone," the type of pianissimo that most young singers produce, one that is not only totally inappropriate for opera but also unhealthy for the instrument. To be able to sing a pianissimo in the upper voice that does not flood the tone with air (i.e. it could carry over an orchestra and doesn't sound airy) is one of the most difficult things to learn.
