After soprano and tenor, indeed. I think he rates basses next, then boy
sopranos, and finally gets around to mezzos out of stinky necessity. Had
he known any countertenors, he'd probably have written more for them than
he did for mezzo. I frankly think he had a mezzo-phobia, that he shared
with Mozart and Leoncavallo.
