Actually, Mark, I agree with every word you wrote. I certainly felt that de Becque should be an opera singer, and was sort of offended that this particular actor was cast for some other reason that his singing ability (little), in my opinion!
About the carrying a tune thing -- Oh yes...people not only mistake that for singing, but if you carry this thing further, people are extremely impressed even if an out-of-tune singer sings something they know! I've noticed in school concerts, etc., that when anything familiar is performed, it receives a standing ovation (hardly means anything anymore), and does not have to be particularly well-executed! Arrrggh.
