I agree with others who have posted that this was partly
stylistic. Remember, too, that although this castration was performed on
boys with *promising* voices, there was no guarantee that they would all
develop into top-level singers. They were not all Farinelli's, even as not
every tenor performing today is at the same level as Bjoerling or
Pavarotti, for example.
