Thank you Shiela, I had been to the etymology but all it gave me
were references to LOW DUTCH and OLD FRENCH.

So given that ALTO does not follow the spelling of either
ALTUS or ALTER , how do you choose altus?

My Alfred reference says the LOWEST female voice as well as the
HIGHEST male voice. Still that's two I suppose. Just joking! Reg.

My Oxford says among other things, the second highest of a group.
