Ernie, 255 character file names was a new concept with Windows NT, the commercial release of Windows, and subsequently Windows 98 and Windows 2000. Files in Windows 95 or MS-Dos will be shorten to 8 characters, preceded by a tilde (~). If you have many similarly named files, this can be rather confusing.
