Poor binding ( to the extent that the books generally start falling apart when used at all!) is a constant dilemma when using many of the scores for Gilbert and Sullivan Shows. Some of us at the Durham Savoyards (North Carolina, not England!) take our scores to Kinko's and have them cut off the binding and replace it with a spiral ring. This only works if there is adequate room in the center of the score, but is an absolute lifesaver! I usually have them laminate the cover too as it greatly strengthens the book. This could be done for many other music books too, if one wanted to spend the money.
