In a master class given by Frederica von Stade at Univ. of Houston, she revealed that she was around 24 when she began formal (university) training. She seems to have made it.
I found the audible gasp from an audience member at her revelation humorous, because there I sat, at the ripe old age of 36, beginning my formal training.
24 is young. In fact, you might even have an edge over younger students, because you likely have a better awareness of what your goals are, and what it will take to achieve them. And now, thanks to the ignorant remarks of an advisor, you know the prejudices you *may* have to overcome to succeed, despite your age. But 24 too old?? That's laughable.
