The thing to remember about Spasmodic Dysphonia is that the problem is not in the vocal apparatus, but, in the neurological control of it. Spasticity effects many people with neurological insults. Vocal Spasticity is yet another manifestation. As Dr. Schweinfurth has already mentioned, the cause of SD is often unknown. Diane Reim of WAMU in Washington DC has been afflicted with it, as well as a country singer in the mid 60s who was known as the "Caruso of Country." (His name eludes me at this moment.) Your friend may have varying degrees of dysphonia from mild diplophonia to total vocal lock down. Just be patient and attentive when speaking to her. She can't help what is happening to her voice.
Maybe she would benefit from singing lessons. Vocal awareness never hurts.
Good luck to you both. Michael E. Chesebro, M.A.,C.C.C., S.L.P. Voice & Fax: 714/596-3344
