Andrea Bocelli was here in Albany at our huge sports/performance venue.
Seats went from $45 to $375 and the place was packed. As seems to be the
case wherever he goes, the reviewer zeroed right in on his weaknesses, "no
buinsess singing opera, certainly not at these prices, waste of our time,
opera doesn't belong blasted over mikes in a hockey rink, Bocelli should
stick to expressive singing of Italian folk songs, which he does well...".
The public who paid those prices, however, responded passionately the next
day in the editorial section with a full page of letters praising him and
lambasting the critic for his smallmindedness. The gist of their replies was
that "if our admiration for him as an artist develops in us an appreciation
for opera, what harm can there be in it?" and "well, yes, but it's a very
nice hockey rink!"
