I have always heard that singers should never use mentholated cough lozenges because menthol is too drying and irritates the throat. I would guess that menthol in the form of Vicks Vaporub, either on your chest or in the well of a vaporizer would have a similar effect. It may help you breathe easier if you have sinus congestion but, in general, as a singer, I'd stay away from it.

Menthol is considered addictive depending on context of use. In general anything that is "cooling" or deadens sensation is a no no for a singer. However if you are sick, menthol, mints (pepper and others) are very effective decongestants. many aromatic plant oils share this effect and I have found cloves to be the most effective decongestant. Boil them and inhale steam if sick, don't do this and sing. Your house will smell great and you get a clove steam facial at the same time.
