We'll correct students on poor breathing posture, but we won't impose a specific posture either. As soon as we get the students vocal cords to close properly throughout his/her range, eventually there will be no more air escaping uncompressed, and breath support is the natural result. Not to paraphrase, but if the cords aren't closing, air leaks. If air leaks, you can't compress the air, and "artificial" breath support becomes absolutely useless.
If by support you meant +when+ to breath in a singing phrase, I usually let my students "do their instinctive thing", and if it's not working, I'll show them how, but usually it's not a problem since they've learned how to make their cords close and they don't run out of air that easily.
