Barbara Bonney said a few years ago in an interview,
that her voice never got bigger, because she did not
want her voice to change. Furthermore she said that it
is an open secret that most people work hard to make
their voices bigger. There have been more examples of
people that kept singing lyrical (Tito Schipa, Alfredo
Krauss) and were able to keep the lyrical beauty of
their voices up into very high age. On the other hand
it is quite easy to ruin your voice in a few years, if
you sing roles that are to heavy for you. In general,
there is a tendency to sing heavier roles, the older
you get, but as far as I know, nobody ever has proven
that this has to do with age, rather than with making
your torso wider, your muscles stronger and maybe even
your vocal cords thicker etc. just by practising. I
personally think that the age-related changes are the
least important ones, but finally also the most
definite ones, because the art of singing post-mortem
is not often practised.
