1) Do it on Alban Berg's Wozzek. It will impress the heck out of him
2) If you are uncertain as to the differences between 19th and 20th
century music, then this is the first issue to address. You need to
have a pretty clear understanding of the musical evolution from 18th to
19th to 20th century (basically knowing attributes of Baroque,
Classical, Romantic, Late Romantic, Expressionism, and Serialism) before
you write on 20th century materials.

Good luck. It is not as hard as it sounds. Start with the Oxford and
Harvard dictionaries of music, then move on to Groves.
