kurt,
karen is right. if you sing these transposed arias in a public
performance there will be those who will be shocked beyond repair and you may
never be invited back. however, one of the most respected lieder singers of
the century, dietrich fischer-dieskau, sang almost all his lieder perfomances
and recordings in transpostition. this practice was not only accepted but
praised by 'serious' audiences. if you desire to perform opera arias
transposed in public, and i encourage you to 'go for it', you may want to
brace the 'museum-minded' members of your audience with a warning in the
program notes along with a passionate statement as to your reasons for doing
so.
