That seems pretty silly advice to me, since the speaking voice and singing voice are the same instrument, and whatever speech habits one has are going to effect one's singing, for better or worse. I have often thought that all singing students should spend the first semester just working on developing a good speaking voice. It would make subsequent semesters a whole different kettle of fish!
