This reminds me of some of the delightful recordings of Larry Clinton and his orchestra in the 1930s. Back then, the royalties on new jazz standards were so high that Clinton cleverly dug into the public domain for material, which he then rearranged for his jazz/swing band. My favourite Clinton "public domain" borrowings are his Big Band with Vocalist renderings of "Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix" from SAMSON ET DALILA and "I dreamt I dwelt in marble halls" from Michael Balfe's 1840s opera THE BOHEMIAN GIRL. If you can find either (or both) of these recordings, they are delightful!
