Gerry:

Just a caveat, Vocalist is made up of a very diverse population of singers,
teachers, college educators, vocal hobbyists, doctors, etc. Almost all of
us are passionate about what we do and in our desire to help other singers.
Sometimes in our zeal to help, we may unintentionally "diss" eachother and
other techniques for singing and teaching.

If, as a previous poster wrote: "you are ever singing with any more
manipulation, tension, or
just pure effort than it takes to talk", I hope you will NOT summarily dump
your teacher. These symptoms can be caused by many factors other than your
teacher's technique and ability to convery it to you. Allergies, chronic
body tension, a stressful job, can all cause singer and non-singer alike to
tense, causing you to grab and work harder than you need to. There is also
the emotional factor of making yourself vulnerable in the very unique way a
singer does. A student who is uncomfortable speaking in front of people may
be triply so when singing, even when it's just in front of a teacher. If you
are learning a new technique and have not been able to devote time to
practice, this can also cause stress. Please discuss these things with your
teacher, before jettisoning him/her for a new teacher, unless, of course,
you just plain don't like him/her!
