Dear CG:
Don't be so sure that a liberal arts degree is less valuable than one
from a conservatory environment. You will probably have a broader base of
knowledge and people and skills than do your conservatory counterparts, and
many liberal arts schools offer an excellent music undergraduate program with
a number of ensemble and performing choices. Here at UNC-Chapel Hill, where
I teach, our department has an excellent faculty, an incredible music
library, lots of chances to be in the spotlight, and lots of individual
attention. Our students are also extremely bright and motivated and
well-rounded (you have to be, to get in here!). Many of our voice
performance majors go on to master's programs at places like Boston U.,
Eastman, Westminster, etc.
I myself have an original undergraduate degree from Miami U. (OH), and I
find my more eclectic background to have been a wonderful base on which to
add further education. Even when I went back to school at the age of 39 (in
music) I found that the academics were extremely manageable!
Just wanted to give you a different point of view about your current
situation. By all means, also explore other programs and opportunities
(maybe studying abroad and doing an intensive language program in Italian or
German, for instance) which will enhance your liberal arts degree.
