This sounds like a job for MISS MANNERS! In her column, she has bemoaned the current practice of having an "admission charge" for weddings, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs/first communions, etc. (She calls it "turning it into a fundraising event.") Some folks have been so brazen as to insist that the wedding gift cover the cost of the dinner & reception!
My family has a lot of fun with these wedding advice things.
