This is not a very glamorous suggestion, but you would probably benefit from some voice lessons. My guess is that the problems you describe stem from not having your breath as well-coordinated as it could be, which in turn puts too much strain on your throat. (Oversimplified -- a teacher will be able to explain it much more specific to your own voice!) When you look for a teacher, look for someone who is comfortable with the style of music that you like to sing. Believe it or not, there are voice teachers who are not classical wonks! Good luck!
