Gerry, A couple of thoughts that might work. First, do you have difficulty when you speak? Are you able to project your voice, do you run out of air when you talk, is it breathy? If not, then your voice is a great "size" and you will be able to sing easily and be able to be easily heard without putting forth as much effort. It takes very little air pressure to create more volume, so don't think that breathing in a larger breathe and pushing more air through will increase the dynamic level, if anything it will make you light-headed....LOL THe core thing and the first thing your teacher should be focusing on is getting your cords to adduct properly, or shut in laymen's terms..........once that happens breathing will not be an issue for you....from there, you gradually add air pressure to increase volume, but never sing any louder than the air pressure the voice can hold at the time, if your voice goes breathy, back off and go back to where it was a full sound,,,,,,,,,just like your speaking voice. Last, if you are ever singing with any more manipulation, tension, or just pure effort than it takes to talk, FIND ANOTHER TEACHER........the process is not that difficult. Your effort should be spent in delivering the lyric of the song, not in worrying about how high your soft palette is, whether your tone is forward, or whether or not you took a large enough breathe. Hope this helps, Sincerely, Mary Beth Osborn
