Maybe this will help guide us - it's from the Vocalist homepage and seems =
as
near a "mission statement" or raison d'=EAtre as we've been given for the
list:

"VOCALIST was started to get together singers all over the world and to
offer a forum of discussion on teaching and studying singing. On the maili=
ng
list we talk about technique, repertoire and interpretation among other
things. All levels of skill and all styles of singing are covered and ther=
e
are over 800 subscribers. The language of the list is English and it is op=
en
to everyone."

In a previous post, Yvette wrote:
"(snip)However, I remember serveral postings a few months ago concerning
opinions about opera singers Charlotte Church springs immediately to
mind)and a few broadway singers (ditto Bernadette Peters) and I didn't see
any postings complaining about those entries."

Yvette, to me the difference is that we were discussing technique related =
to
teaching and studying when those other names came up. And we've certainly
discussed Mariah Carey's technique pretty thoroughly before as well withou=
t
getting into "She's the greatest!" "Is not!" " Is too!" "Is not!" " Is too=
!"

But you're right, everyone has the right to post what they will and how th=
ey
will and if we don't like it, we can just skip those threads or individual
posters. Eventually, members who are really looking for another kind of li=
st
will realize that and go searching for one that is a better match for thei=
r
interests. And although I think Mark's comment resonated with many of us
(OK, I admit it - I laughed), we've been a lot more patient, at least in
print, with some really unpleasant "fully grown" posters.
