Hello Rachel:
For great cheap all-around Italian work, how about swapping with a native = speaker who wants to learn to read music or would trade for a few lessons?= You could run a little classified ad in your neighborhood paper or, if yo= u're in a bigger city, an Italian-language paper. The you'd get the overview you're looking for plus a chance to hear the music of the languag= e. As my high school Italian teacher used to say, "La lingua Italiana =E9 = come la musica degl'angeli". (the Italian language is like the music of th= e angels).
Good luck!
Laura

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good self-study Italian langua= ge program? I'm not looking to master the language by *any* means, just to= understand the grammar, sentence structure, etc. enough to where I can ro= ughly translate an aria with the use of a good dictionary. I've browsed at=
bookstores, but all the self-study programs I found seemed geared toward t= ravellers. I've considered taking a college course but would like to see w= hat I can do on my own first.
Thanks in advance, and joyous New Year to all! Rachel
