Interesting - my voice teacher and I had a little "tiff" over this one. I insist on singing the song as written by Adam, and she keeps trying to "correct" me to the "traditional" reading. Suffice it to say I'm a very strong-willed person, and refuse to be bullied into convention!
I'm singing this - all three verses (again, for some reason, the middle verse seems to get cut by most performers), sadly in English (but one can't have everything) - tonight, along with my own "arrangement" of Richard Rowland's "The Blessed Virgin's Lullaby" to the music of Peter Warlock ("Rest Sweet Nymphs") - one of those happy coincidences where the text of the first happens to fit perfectly on the music of the second, which is an absolute favourite song of mine.
