Regardless of what the Greek version of X means, I think the problem is that
99% of people have NO idea that its meaning has anything to do with Christ.
And I wonder if the people who originally started replacing Christ with X
knew it either, or if it was one more way to make Christmas more broadly
acceptable for retail purposes.
