Hi Lorraine:
Since you live in NYC there's probably tons of competition so I don't know
if the things I did back in 1982 when I first started teaching would help
you
or not.
Firstly.....advertise....local papers...bulletin boards (especially at
community
music schools)
Either rent a place for a studio or make one in your home but it should look
professional and have a waiting area and entrance that doesn't distract
your home environment.
Word of mouth is the single greatest advertising medium.
Do a public recital to get your name out there.
If you teach anyone have them perform in the recital also so people can
see the potential in your students.
Get business cards (simple but unique) and pass them around.
Make phone calls to people you know and spread the word that you are
teaching.
Call up other people in the biz and offer your services for coaching on
musicals
or choirs.
Start your own choir or vocal group.
Get yourself out there.
Good luck
I assume you have the training to offer credentials to those who inquire.
