I have an excellent explanation of the song in the CD liner notes that came wilth the Sylvia McNair/Christopher Hogwood CD of Purcell songs, including information about the play Oedipus, which I hadn't been able to find on my own when I was working on the song!

The CD is at home, but I'm not at the moment. So if nobody else posts that particular information, I'll post it this evening.
