I can recommend "Hollywood Diva," a biography of Jeannette MacDonald by Stanley Turk. Here's one singer who wasn't ruined by a) unconventional (to say the least) training, b) starting out as a child star (she made her Academy of Music debut at the age of 5) or c) doing musical theater (she was playing featured roles in Broadway musicals at the time she was tapped for the movies, and capped her career with a regional tour in "The King and I").
