Dear Molly,
I agree with my fellow Listers that you'll have to learn to deal with "rejection", although I personally don't like to call it that way... I see it more as another opportunity to learn from my experiences. Asking yourself what may have kept you from getting the part (other than favoritism, looks, or similar "higher forces" which have nothing to do with your ability to sing a part well). Learn from it. And, according to your story, it could have been favoritism from the director towards her own student. You said you sounded glorious on the Messiah; that's GREAT! Nothing like getting a good kick from your own voice!
I've heard quite a few college/university voice students complain about not getting enough dedication from their professors. I believe voice lessons are quite "personal"; if you can't relate to your teacher in any way, maybe you should look for one you really like. Most of these students I mentioned complemented their college studies with lessons from a private teacher. If you really love to sing as much as you say you do, forget about college politics and focus on what really matters to you, your voice. If a private teacher can help you achieve your goals faster, then maybe you should consider this alternative. I'm sure everyone on this list will gladly help you find one in your area.
My two cents.
Hang in there!!
Best Regards, Rocio Guitard Speech Level Singing Instructor
