The proper way is the way that works for you. And it may not be the same way all the time. If you read books on writing, you will read that you should let your creative ideas flow out without stopping to edit them along the way. This stops the flow, whereas there is always time to edit later after your jillion good ideas have poured forth. The same can be true of musical ideas. If they start to come, just write them down (or record them) as fast as you can. Later you can go back and sort, delete, add, change, etc.
This is a subject near and dear to my heart right now, since I am on sabbatical and my official project is the composition for 5 songs. I have already completed the first one, and it went fairly quickly, whereas the second one is more complex musically and emotionally, and is taking more effort. This is all as it should be. Just go with the flow. There's no right or wrong, and you are the only judge!
