Never a more true statement was made about the whole theatrical profession.
Another statement I have come to accept is, he (she) who casts the show has
the only right answers anyone cares about. You may be better than the person
that got the role, but no one in the audience will ever know or care. Use
each audition is an experience to grow as an artist. My best words of wisdom
are this. When you audition for musical theater always do the best you can,
prepare well in advance, and learn from your mistakes. Also learn from
others that you see audition. If their performance is effective or not you
will know. The most difficult thing I am trying to learn how to do is
present my songs in a very natural and relaxed manner. You are probably an
old hand at that since you have done some stage work in a title role. Pick a
song and character that fits your personality, because you don't know what
shows they are doing and they are going to cast you based on your look and
personality anyway. The best auditions for opera, musical theater, anything
are when people get to know you through the music or other presentation.
It's hard to open your self up in front of a group of people, but most of the
time they are going to like what they see. Only when you get to know the
character who sings the song will you be able to act it out properly. It's
easier when that character has many things in common with your self.

Best of Luck,
Jason
