Yes Jessica I think your right... however, I'm sure most everyone has heard
Mariah's rendition of 'Without You'. To me, that song is amazing, her
voice is full and while that song doesn't have a particularly wide range, it
is perhaps one of her most defining performances.

Oh puh-leeeze! 7 octaves. If she can sing seven octaves, she can sing
virtually every note on the piano. She likely has a larger than average
range - but who really cares? If I've said it once, I've said it a million
times. AN AMAZING RANGE DOES NOT EQUAL AMAZING SKILL.

There are some wonderful, amazing, truly gifted singers who have a limited
range but have glorious use of the notes within that range. And, there are
some other singers with impressive ranges who can't hold a candle to others
in terms of qaulity singing. I have a pretty decent range, but have never
been asked my range except by other singers who are simply curious. Even in
auditions when range is being tested I have never been taken to the extreme
of my range in either direction - it simply doesn't matter as long as one
has a mastery of the range of notes one needs to sing for any given part or
role.
